UCIM-Abroad
UCIM-Abroad is an educational organization dedicated to promoting global learning opportunities in Croatia. Established by Dr. Rita Balaban, former economics professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UCIM-Abroad connects students from U.S. universities with high-quality academic and cultural experiences abroad.
The name UCIM is inspired by the Croatian word "učim" meaning "I am learning" or "I am studying," and also stands for Undertaking and Championing global education to Inspire Minds.
UCIM-Abroad, established by Dr. Rita Balaban, who, during her tenure at UNC-Chapel Hill, led four student groups to Croatia during the summers of 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. These five-week summer programs were held in Split and quickly became popular among students due to their educational value, rich cultural immersion, ideal location, and affordability. Enrollment was consistently at capacity. Recognizing the significant personal and academic growth her students experienced while studying abroad, Dr. Balaban retired from UNC-Chapel Hill in July 2023 to fully dedicate herself to advancing global education in Croatia through UCIM-Abroad.
Since 2018, FEBT has collaborated with UCIM-Abroad in organizing summer school programs in Split. These programs offer students the opportunity to take joint courses taught by professors from FEBT and visiting faculty from partner universities abroad, combining academic excellence with meaningful cultural immersion.
Through this partnership, we provide students with a truly global classroom experience, emphasizing academic rigor, affordability, and cultural enrichment.
We are proud to continue working with UCIM-Abroad to welcome talented students from around the world to Split and FEBT.
